Thrings advises Britain’s first female master tailor on opening Savile Row store

Background

Kathryn Sargent formed her eponymously-named business in 2012. She quickly gained an impressive reputation for designing, cutting and making British-infused, high-quality tailored suits, contemporary pieces and uniforms for men and women.

Previously, Kathryn trained and worked at celebrated men’s tailors Gieves & Hawkes for 15 years. While there, in 2009 she became the first female head cutter in the history of Savile Row.

Our involvement

Having garnered huge success, Ms Sargent sought a return to Savile Row with her own business. Our Commercial Property Team advised on all legal aspects of letting the 854 sq ft premises at 37 Savile Row. Alison’s support enabled Ms Sargent to meet a demanding timetable to sign up for – and secure – the store.

Ms Sargent said of Thrings’ involvement: “Alison Jarvis and the team at Thrings were extremely efficient and helpful with providing all the legal advice and assistance required, and they went over and above to ensure the deadlines were met.”

The outcome

The store opened on 6 April 2016 as a spring and summer seasonal residency and positioned Ms Sargent as the first female master tailor to launch a new store on the famous Mayfair street in its 350-year history.

Ms Sargent said: “I am delighted to be opening a shop on Savile Row. As a tailor it has been a long-held ambition of mine, and throughout my career, I have upheld the excellent values of Savile Row. I am thrilled to be making history, although for me being a woman is incidental, I am a tailor first and foremost.”

Savile Row is a shopping destination of international renown. The street is already home to many notable tailors, and Ms Sargent’s arrival will further enhance its reputation for fashion retail excellence. Thrings is very pleased to have helped Ms Sargent reinforce her own status as a world-leading tailor in this prestigious location.
