That winning feeling

Peter Boucher of Excalibur Communications talks to Thrings partner Kate Westbrook about his company’s recent success at the Techies.

Many congratulations on being named Tech Team of the Year. Why did you enter?

The Excalibur engineering team works fantastically well together to deliver quality service and get amazing results for its customers. They have definitely gone above and beyond this year, helping more clients than ever to work from home. We thought entering the Techies would be a good way of recognising the team’s strengths and expertise in IT and telecoms, both within the company and across the Swindon and Wiltshire business community.

Were you confident about winning?

We’ve entered the Techies before, and while we’ve been shortlisted, we’ve never won. With this experience behind us, as well as having some excellent service results, we felt we were in with a chance but couldn’t count on it.

How has Excalibur created a team culture?

Excalibur has a long tradition of having a strong and supportive team-based culture. We encourage good communications across the company and host a monthly business breakfast. This is not only a company update session, but an opportunity for different teams to mingle informally. We also have around 20 fun team-led events throughout the year: the tech team organised a whole-company LAN gaming experience for Best Companies Day and a crazy golf event to support our wellbeing programme. We also like our charity challenges: last year, a third of our staff took part in the UK 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge, raising £30,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Jessie May and Bristol Children’s Charity.

What does winning the award mean to Excalibur?

It’s very important. We’ve been judged by our business peers and independently recognised as a top IT and telecoms business in Swindon and Wiltshire. It’s also fantastic news for the team who, as you’d imagine, are chuffed to bits!
