Success in the business world can often be attributed to careful and considerate personal planning, as the latest instalment of the Breakfast Exchange demonstrated.
Co-organised by The Business Exchange, Thrings Solicitors and accountants Richardson Swift, the latest breakfast panel event, held at the Ivy in Bath on Tuesday, 25 March, brought together more than 60 organisations from across Bath and the wider region for an insightful panel discussion, chaired by TBE editor Anita Jaynes.
Covering a range of topics related to the long-term success of running a business and the use of legal and financial advice to safeguard professional and personal assets, the audience heard from Nathan Sheppard, Founder and Managing Director of SBS Design and Build, Bokk and Vyoo and Alex Barton of Wadswick Country Store on their experiences in building a stable and successful business.
Nathan Sheppard said: “It was a pleasure to be a part of the panel and share my experience of starting businesses, the obstacles I’ve faced and the advice I have found most important along the way. Talking to people both before and after the panel showed there were a lot of business owners in the room that were in similar situations so having a platform to explore this was very exciting.”
Alex Barton said: “Ensuring the success of your business is not something you do alone and having the right people to help you navigate the financial and legal complexities that will enable you to achieve your goals is vital. It was great to reflect on this with the panel and share our views on what impact this can have in both the short and long term, and I hope everyone found it useful.”
Joining them on the panel were Debbie Boulton, Managing Director of Richardson Swift and Sam Doherty, Partner in Thrings’ Private Client team, who discussed the risks businesses face, as well as the various mistakes often made and the advice they would offer to overcome those challenges.
Sam Doherty said: “Having a plan in place is a surefire way to give your business venture the best start possible, set it up for sustainable growth and ensure you are prepared for all eventualities, both personally and professionally. It was great to share the panel with two really successful local businesses that demonstrate a forward-thinking approach can thrive even in times of uncertainty.”
Debbie Boulton said: “There was great energy in the room for today’s event and the audience really appreciated the openness and honesty the guest speakers shared on their business experiences. Being a business owner can be a scary position to be in and having a ‘trusted adviser’ who you can have frank conversations with and who will challenge as well as support you in your business decisions is key for success.”
