Getting to know... Emily Prout

Eat food, cook food and read all food …… there’s nothing contentious about our litigation expert’s hobbies

What do you do?

I’m a senior Associate who joined Thrings in 2007 as a trainee. Over my 13 years at the firm, I have worked in our Dispute Resolution Team (spending time working in our Bath, Swindon and Bristol offices) and I specialise in inheritance, wills and trust disputes.

Why did you decide to follow the career you are in now?

I wish I was one of those who had an inspiring moment that led them to become a lawyer, but my truth is much less interesting. Thinking back to my 18-year-old self, I knew I wanted to do a degree at university that would stand me in good stead for graduate recruitment and I was impressed by the glamorous image of a law firm shown on Ali McBeal (those who remember the series will show their age!), so I headed straight from school to study law. To my amazement, I really enjoyed it. I knew I wanted to work in inheritance disputes when I realised that no two matters were the same, and that it gives you a great opportunity to work closely with clients, at often an emotional time. Out of all the aspects of my job, working with my clients is my favourite part.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am a big foodie, and really love to cook; I find there is nothing more relaxing than chopping and following a recipe, with something tasty to show at the end of it. I have a bit of cookbook obsession; I already have far too many to fit comfortably in the kitchen, but I can’t stop myself buying new releases. My favourite ‘celebrity’ chef is Marcus Wareing, so you can imagine how excited I was last year when I won a competition to visit his Michelin-starred restaurant in London. It was a 2020 highlight, in an otherwise difficult year. I would recommend a visit.

Other than cooking and eating, I enjoy spending time with my lovely family. I have recently become an Auntie, which is very exciting. In the next few months, we are also getting a wire-haired dachshund puppy, which I am sure will keep us on our toes.

Name one thing that helps make your day better?

A strong cup of coffee!

What is the best place you have ever travelled to and why?

It’s hard to pick a favourite, but Italy is the place that my husband, Chris, and I always return to; the food, the breath-taking landscape and glamour is an intoxicating mix. Closer to home, I am never happier than when I am in Bath; it is where I was born, and where my heart will always belong.

Which celebrity do you think you are most like and why?

Not strictly a celebrity, but I do get likened to Monica from Friends by my family and friends... mainly because I love to organise and keep things neat. In another life, I could have even been a chef like her. Let’s face it, I have the cookbooks!

Describe yourself in three words?

Loyal. Caring. Ambitious.
