Elaine Meyrick, Partner, Corporate and Commercial
What motivated you to become a lawyer?
A school careers advisor once suggested that I should consider a career in either banking or law. I enjoyed public speaking, economics and business studies and following a few successful work placements at local law firms, I was hooked.
Why do you specialise in Corporate Law?
It is probably (in my opinion) the most interesting area of law. I work with different businesses across various sectors who are located all over the world. No one day is the same – in any week, I could be (for example) helping a client to sell the company they founded, helping another with an investment to launch a new product, assisting the succession and tax team with setting up a family investment company for another client, or acting for trustees of an employee ownership trust in acquiring a majority stake in a business. It also feeds into lots of other areas of law and professional services such as tax and finance, so I get the pleasure of working with colleagues specialising in all other disciplines.
Can you highlight a case or a standout moment that was particularly interesting?
I won the Bristol Junior Law of the year in 2012 – that was pretty cool
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Getting to know clients, their businesses, their interests, and reaching a ‘milestone’ event such as a sale, acquisition or investment. It’s often such an important time for the client and I really enjoy being part of the team that helps them to reach what is sometimes a life-long goal.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Gigs! Love live music, all forms, particularly stadium and festival sets.
Name one thing that makes your life better?
Sunshine.
