Getting to know… Ramona Derbyshire

Written by Thrings | Oct 4, 2021 8:30:00 AM

Partner Ramona Derbyshire is a real force to be reckoned with. When she’s not leading our Business Growth team, she lives with her two young boys, a puppy and husband in a caravan while they convert their “barn in Calne”.

What do you do?

In a nutshell, I help people and businesses resolve disputes.

I act for all sorts of clients from SMEs to multinationals, providing commercial advice, helping them to navigate complex situations, including joint venture, shareholder and director disputes, contract claims, quality issues and negligence actions.

I really love getting underneath the skin of a business, and the culture and priorities of every client, trying to resolve disputes quickly and cost-effectively, whether through negotiated settlement and mediation or court action.

Why did you decide to become a lawyer?

I actually studied both law and politics at university, not really realising it would double the work. I don’t think I ever expected to practise law. I thought a law degree would stand me in good stead but never saw myself as a lawyer. Politics was really interesting and I loved the discussion and argument aspects. That now fits very well into the day job and I can do what I love which is to help people.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I know it’s a cliché, but I don’t have a lot of spare time. I do enjoy playing tennis, but most of my time is spent with my two young boys – 7 and 10 – and our puppy. We all live together in a caravan in a field at the moment, while my husband and I convert our barn in Calne. We’re likely to be here for some time, so thinking of upgrading to a static van – Oh the glamour!

Tell us one random fact about yourself?

I’ve got two! I have a twin sister who is a music teacher in a primary school – and I can wiggle my ears!

What is the best place you have ever travelled to and why?

Definitely Italy, specifically Rome. I love everything about the Italian culture, food, history – everything. We haven’t taken the children there yet – but can’t wait to do that. Rome will blow their minds – all those amazing buildings – you turn a corner and there’s another one!

If you could go back in history for one day, when would it be and why?

I would go back 10 years to when my first son was born prematurely and tell myself that he will be ok.

Describe yourself in three words.

Loud, used-to-be-organised (hyphenated that can be one word can’t it?) and positive
