Kate Barber, Partner, Family
What motivated you to become a lawyer?
I wanted to be a West End singer but was told to get a ‘proper’ job by my well-meaning parents. Once at University, I got hooked on the law and how it impacts our everyday life. In my area of law, it can be the first time a person has come into contact with the law and it is a real privilege to guide them through what can be a very overwhelming and emotional time.
Why do you specialise in family law?
I work in the Family team dealing with financial settlements and private children issues on divorce and separation. I offer wealth protection for those starting out in their relationships with inherited family wealth or those remarrying later in life and seeking to protect assets for their children to inherit. As well as the traditional solicitor-led method, I also offer alternative and more modern routes to resolving issues, including via our One Couple, One Lawyer service and by Collaborative Law.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m a mum to two children who keep me busy with their social calendars. I try and exercise three times a week and visit the theatre regularly with my family. I have rekindled my love of reading in the last few years and always have a good thriller on the go!
If you weren't a lawyer what would you do?
An opera singer. I absolutely love listening to all genres of music but particularly some of the classic operas. I have recently been to the Royal Opera House to see Tosca. Some might say that I have the Diva part sorted!
